Local Cardiologist Passes Echocardiography Specialty Exam
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Cardiologist Louie Coulis, MD, FACC, recently passed the National Board of Echocardiography’s rigorous Examination of Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography. Successful completion of this portion of echocardiography certification puts Dr. Coulis well on his way to becoming the region’s first cardiologist certified in echocardiography. In addition to testing knowledge of echocardiography principles, instrumentation and advanced techniques, the extensive exam assesses a physician’s knowledge and understanding of vascular heart disease, congenital heart conditions, advanced heart chamber functioning, cardiac masses, and other related cardiac diseases and disorders.
Echocardiography uses ultrasound technology to look at the heart’s anatomy and function, and it requires special training and expertise to conduct the procedure and analyze results. This noninvasive test is used to evaluate many heart-related conditions, including unexplained chest pain, heart enlargement, congestive heart failure, cardiac tumors, and other heart defects and problems.
Dr. Coulis, whose practice is the region’s only independent cardiology practice, sees undergoing the exam and certification process as a natural part of his commitment to cardiac excellence. “By pushing myself in different subareas within cardiology, I am able to broaden the scope of the services offered at Coulis Cardiology,” says Dr. Coulis. “We want our patients to get the full spectrum of cardiac care they need, right here in the area.”
